The Teaching History Her Way Podcast
Mexican-American School Experience & Shaping Student Identity
Show Notes

Amanda Garcia, proud Tejana, chats with me in this episode about her experience and her family's experience as Mexican Americans in Texas.  This leads to an enlightening, reflective conversation about how we as teachers help to shape students' identities through our lessons and our interactions with them.  Amanda gives us ideas about how to be practitioners who honor our students' cultures, customs, and languages and leaves us with questions to reflect upon our practices, as our intention to help our diverse body of students isn't as influential as the impact of our actions and words.

Amanda's Reflection Questions:

  • Were my biases in check for that lesson?
  • Were my students centered and were my students' voices amplified?
  • Am I asking students for feedback regularly?
  • Is my classroom an echo chamber or a comfortable space?
